Congratulations to Judge Nelly Withers


Nelly Withers was recently sworn in as Chief Recorders Court Judge by Judge Coursey. Judge Withers’s husband, John, is by her side.

Nelly Withers was recently appointed chief judge to the DeKalb Recorders Court and sworn in by Judge Coursey on Jan.7. Judge Withers has worked in DeKalb County for 17 years, first as an assistant district attorney under Bob Wilson, and again when she was appointed as an associate Recorder’s Court Judge in 2002. After working in the DA’s office, Withers practiced law part-time while her children were small, working on projects with the AOC, and as a SAG for the Attorney General’s Office doing 1983 litigation in the middle and northern districts and in the Eleventh Circuit. Before her appointment to the Recorders Court, she worked at McNally, Edwards and Bailey doing general practice and criminal defense. Judge Withers is married to John Withers and has two children, both students at the University of Georgia.

Mock Trial Volunteers Needed for Feb. 13 Competition

It’s that time again – time for the YLD-sponsored Mock Trial competition for high school students. The DeKalb regional competition is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13, at the DeKalb County Courthouse. We need evaluators and judges for the three rounds of competition, at 9 a.m., 1 p.m., and the 4 p.m. finals. Please let me know if you are available to evaluate or judge one or more rounds (each lasts two-three hours and you will be required to arrive 30 minutes before your round). Include the following in your response email:

The recent earthquake in Haiti was absolutely devastating. In an area slightly smaller than Maryland, 200,000 people are suspected dead or missing. More than 3 million citizens of Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, require basic necessities: clean water, food and medical supplies. They were not prepared for the destructive effect of a natural disaster. Are you ready?

As lawyers we are known for giving advice that helps clients plan, but when it comes to planning for a disaster and recovery, we need to take our own advice and create a plan. You need to plan for how your firm will cope with natural or man-made disasters ranging from fires and floods to terrorist attacks, hurricanes, chemical explosions, or blizzards.

DeKalb Public Safety Director Miller to Speak

DeKalb Public Safety Director William Miller

William Z. Miller, newly appointed director of Public Safety for DeKalb County, is our Jan. 21 luncheon speaker. Miller was born and raised in Atlanta and has resided in DeKalb County for 20 years. He received his bachelor of science degree (magna cum laude) in Criminal Justice from Georgia State University, Atlanta, and his law degree from Georgia State University College of Law in 2004.

Prior to becoming Public Safety director, Miller prosecuted felony cases as an assistant district attorney in the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, beginning in February 2007. As an assistant district attorney he participated in the challenge to the state’s recently enacted Gang Statute and was the DA’s representative to DeKalb County’s Juvenile Drug Court.
