Family Law Section Offers Breakfasts Packed with Useful Information

The October and November DeKalb Bar Association Family Law Section Breakfasts both offered participants valuable information for their DeKalb Family Law Cases. The December 4 meeting  featured Steven and Patty Shewmaker, who  discussed QDROs. Look for a recap in the January DeKalb Bar Newsletter. Please join us for the next breakfast Jan. 6! At the November breakfast the Family Law Section presented a panel of DeKalb County Superior Court judges, moderated by board member Kyla Lines, who discussed issues in contested custody cases. Originally, the panel was to include Judges Asha Jackson, Courtney Johnson and Tangela Barrie. Unfortunately, Judge Jackson was ill and could not attend. We hope she’s feeling better!

The Family Law Section of the DeKalb Bar had its second highest attendance ever at the September meeting, with participants eager to learn the “pet peeves” of the Superior Court Judges. The panel consisted of staff attorneys Amy Daldry (Judge Daniel Coursey), Denise Warner (Judge Mark Anthony Scott); Melody Bray (Judge Courtney Johnson); Matthew Harris (Judge Tangela Barrie) and Jason Broth (Judge Linda Warren Hunter). Shannon Hicks, staff attorney for Judge Seeliger, also contributed. Some of the pet peeves were common among the judges, and some were specific to the individual judges. So, the first bit of advice was to know your judge, and that specific judge’s likes and dislikes.
