Electronic Filing Procedures from the State Court of DeKalb County

From the State Court of DeKalb County, State of Georgia:

We need the help and cooperation of the DeKalb Bar Association in making our court records accurate and understandable.

When you e-file, your labeling of the documents carries over into the docket – electronic filing has in some respects outsourced the creation of the court’s record to the filing parties. The mislabeling of electronically filed pleadings creates inefficiency and inaccuracy related to the court’s record. The standing order presented below is an attempt to address that situation.

Many times, mom and dad, in an attempt to transfer as much wealth as possible by saving trustee and executor fees, name one of their children as the executor(rix) of their wills. This sounds like an ideal situation since the siblings love one another and will do the right thing by each other. What better way to celebrate Groundhog Day than at the February 2 Family Law Section Breakfast? You might even see your shadow! You’re sure to start your day with FLS fellowship, an insightful speaker and a delicious breakfast.

The Family Law Section Breakfast is held on the first Thursday of each month, 7:30-9 am at the historic Old Courthouse on the Square in downtown Decatur, 101 E. Court Square. Join us for for a delicious buffet breakfast and a changing lineup of guest speakers who provide insights and new information about family law.

DeKalb Bar Holiday Party Recap

The 2016 DeKalb Bar Association Holiday Party was held in December, once again at the Solarium at historic Scottish Rite in Decatur’s Oakhurst Village. Thanks to our generous sponsors, delicious food and the fellowship of DBA members and friends, a wonderful time was enjoyed by all. Our charity again this year was the Samuel L. Jones Boys and Girls Club and the Pajama Program, which delivers warm sleepwear and age-appropriate books to children in need. The ample contributions from our attendees helped local children have a great holiday. Thanks to all who attended the party and gave so generously.

New Marriage Laws and Tax Code Changes

Same-sex legally married couples are now treated exactly the same as opposite-sex married couples for federal income tax purposes. Married = married. This is mostly good news for same-sex couples but there are still some transition issues and a few disadvantages, as there always have been with being married. (more…)
