DeKalb Chief ADA Wins National Award for Successful Prosecution of Capital Murder Case
Don Geary, one of DeKalb County’s chief assistant district attorneys, has won a national award from a group of government lawyers for winning a conviction and death sentence for an unusually abhorrent murder. Geary received the Outstanding Advocacy Award in Capital Litigation from the Association of Government Attorneys in Capital Litigation (AGACL) on July 31. AGACL provides resource and research support to district attorneys who are handling capital punishment cases and their appeals.

Black Women Attorneys Honor DeKalb Chief ADA With Leadership Award
R. Javoyne Hicks White, a chief assistant district attorney for DeKalb County, has been officially recognized for her service to the legal profession by the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (GABWA). Hicks White accepted GABWA’s Barbara A. Harris Award for Service to the Community on July 18 at the organization’s annual gala at the Atlanta Ritz-Carlton. The award recognizes those whose community service extends beyond the practice of law and who have made a significant contribution to ensure the social, political and economic equality of minorities and women.

DeKalb Judges in the Running for State Positions
Judges J. Antonio DelCampo and Wayne M. Purdom, have recently made the short list for the four vacant judgeships in the Northern District Court of Georgia. A total of 11 nominees is vying for these four seats. While the DeKalb Bar would hate to lose them, we wish them both the best of luck.

Mike Hawkins of the newly formed Hawkins Law Firm has been asked to participate in a panel discussion at an upcoming CLE for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Mike’s topic will be “Starting a Practice in a Recession?” The program takes place Oct. 7-12 in Las Vegas.

Judge Barrie Honored at Gala
The Honorable Tangela M. Barrie received the Bensonetta Tipton Lane Award for Commitment to the Family on July 18 at the 2009 Glitter Gala & Auction Banquet. This award, presented by The Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, was given to Judge Barrie for her dedication to the community and families through her work in the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office as a special prosecutor in the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Unit.

Judge Adams Receives Distinguished Jurist Award
DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Gregory A. Adams received the 2009 Distinguished Jurist Award, presented by the Gate City Bar Association Judicial Section, at the annual State Bar of Georgia meeting. Judge Adams was honored for his many contributions to the Georgia Justice System and the greater DeKalb County community during the past 15 years of his judicial service.
