Community Educational Events Address Citizen Concerns

The DeKalb Bar Association invites you to attend this informative series on gang activity, elder abuse, foreclosure fraud and related topics.


Gang Summit

Wednesday, Sept. 29 • 6-8 p.m.

As DeKalb County deputy chief assistant district attorney of the Gang Unit, Mike Carlson has been the pioneer gang prosecutor in Georgia. Gang Detective T.R. Golden will join Mr. Carlson on the program, along with school resource officers. Guests will learn about the common gangs in DeKalb County, how to spot gangs or gang activity and what to do if you suspect gang activity. Citizens will learn more about the Criminal Street Gang Act and the methods DeKalb County prosecutors use to eradicate gangs in the community.


Elder Abuse; Wills & Trusts

Tuesday, Oct. 19 • 6-8 p.m.

Elder Abuse: Your grandson is in jail and he needs bond . . . A member of foreign royalty needs help to remove millions of dollars from his country . . . You have a loose shingle on your roof . . . You have won a sweepstakes. These are some of the scams that target the elderly. Jeanne Canavan, DeKalb County deputy chief assistant district attorney specializing in white collar and elder abuse crimes, will discuss the various types of scams and schemes criminals use and give you tips on how to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Wills & Trusts: Americans are living longer than ever. Many will reach a point at which they can no longer make decisions for themselves. Planning for your future and for the protection of loved ones is critical. Why do you need to make a will? What is a power of attorney? What is an advance directive for health care? When do you need a guardian and conservator? Judge Jeryl Debra Rosh, DeKalb County Probate judge, will address these questions and related issues.


Foreclosure Rescue Fraud; Landlord/Tenant

Foreclosure Rescue Fraud: With high foreclosure rates and property values declining, DeKalb County citizens are more vulnerable than ever to unscrupulous predators trying to separate them from their assets. Matt McCoyd, DeKalb County assistant district attorney in the White Collar Unit, will outline the types of foreclosure rescue fraud, the prime people targeted and ways you can protect yourself and your loved ones.

Landlord/Tenant: In an unprecedented and unpredictable real estate market, many DeKalb County residents and businesses are currently situated as first-time landlords or tenants. Annie Caiola, an attorney with Troutman Sanders, LLP, who focuses her practice on real estate litigation including landlord/tenant disputes, will discuss everything landlords and tenants need to know about lease disputes. Her presentation will include discussions regarding lease interpretation, back-due rent, property improvements, and dispossessory proceedings.


Family Law Panel Discussion

Thursday, Nov. 4 • 7:30-8:30 a.m.
DeKalb History Center
The DBA Family Law Section will host a panel discussion and Q&A session addressing Family Law concerns at the regularly scheduled FLS November breakfast meeting. Judges and family law experts will highlight recent developments in the law and discuss the evolving practice of Family Law in DeKalb County. Following the discussion, panelists will be on hand to answer questions from the audience.

All events are free to the public and include snacks and beverages. The Maloof Center is at 1300 Commerce Dr., intersection of Commerce Drive and W. Trinity. The DeKalb History Center is in the Old Courthouse on the Square, intersection of Clairemont and Ponce De Leon.
