Judge Adams Receives Thurgood Marshall Award

DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Gregory A. Adams was presented with the 2009 Thurgood Marshall award at the DeKalb County NAACP’s 53rd annual Freedom Fund Awards Banquet. Judge Adams received the award for his many contributions toward the advancement of civil liberties within the Georgia Justice System and the greater DeKalb County community during the past 15 years of his judicial service.

Before his election to the Superior Court, Judge Adams spent a decade as Chief Judge of the DeKalb County Juvenile Court. There he implemented on-site mental health screenings and assessments for youth entering the juvenile court, developed “in-home” assessments to reduce the number of nonviolent offenders being held in detention, raised more than $6 million in grant-funding for treatment programs, and developed and implemented a juvenile drug court to treat young offenders with drug problems.

Judge Adams donates many hours each year speaking to youth in the community about ways to stay out of the justice system by making better life choices.

In 2007, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners named the new $45 million juvenile court The Gregory A. Adams Juvenile Justice Center. This was in recognition of Judge Adams’s efforts toward developing a more suitable facility with educational and rehabilitative resources.
