On February 23, Judge Jay Roth of the State Court of Fulton County traveled to DeKalb County to share stories, laughs and practical advice with the DBA Trial Lawyers Section as part of our “View From The Bench” series. Many of the TLS members have had the occasion to appear before Judge Roth in the courtroom, or knew him due to community events. As such, Judge Roth felt quite at home and enjoyed his informal evening with the TLS.

After a brief social time to meet the attendees, Judge Roth reminded his audience that professionalism and appropriate communication are the building blocks to gaining credibility with the court and opposing counsel.

He also answered numerous questions about how he generally handles voir dire, apportionment, collateral source, jury charges and various other trial related issues. Most importantly, he stressed that he understands that putting together an effective trial presentation can be a major ordeal, and that the parties should reach out to the court to see what assistance the court can provide to make things go smoothly during the course of a trial. Judge Roth promised a return visit, and the TLS looks forward to having this great jurist back soon.

Our thanks to Bruce Hagen for once again hosting this event at his offices at at 119 N. McDonough St. in Decatur.
