Trial Lawyers Section Gets a Fresh ‘View from the Bench’
Judge Boulee and Judge Jacobs returned to this annual event of the Trial Lawyers Section to present their now “experienced” views from the bench, sharing their thoughts about what they see working and not working in trials.

As my year as president comes to a close, I have several thoughts that I wanted to share with all of you. At times, it has been difficult to come up with ideas for topics for this newsletter. This time, I have had no trouble at all as I think about how grateful I am for the opportunity I was given to lead this past year.
First, let me say that I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as president of the DeKalb Bar Association this past year. I always look forward to our meetings and social events where I get to see so many friends and colleagues. It has truly been an honor to serve the organization in a leadership capacity. Having said that, I am also excited to see someone else take the reigns and bring a renewed enthusiasm to the Bar.

Miranda: More Than Words
Law Day 2016
In 1961 Congress issued a joint resolution designating May 1 as Law Day. This was subsequently codified in the United Stated Code. Law Day is celebrated across the country during the month of May and is a day on which we take time to examine and celebrate our commitment to the rule of law. It is the opportunity for legal professionals to take an active role in advancing public understanding about law.
Law Day underscores how law and the legal process contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share.
Mary Margaret Oliver Gives DeKalb Bar Family Section Legislative Update

Long-time Georgia legislator (and Decatur family lawyer) Mary Margaret Oliver shared her insights regarding this year’s Georgia Legislative session with those attending the May 5, 2016, breakfast meeting of the DeKalb Bar Association’s Family Law Section. She described some of Governor Nathan Deal’s recent actions, and shared her thoughts regarding the factors that had prompted them. She noted that, at present, Republican members constitute almost a two thirds majority in the General Assembly. This limits the extent to which Democrats, such as Ms. Oliver, can achieve a legislative agenda.
