Law Day is officially celebrated on May 1 of each year by bar associations, courts, judges, and legal professionals across the country. The DeKalb Bar Association had its special observation at the  May membership luncheon with annual awards for outstanding service in law enforcement, student essays and the Liberty Bell award. Law Day was established in 1958 by the American Bar Association to bring attention to the principles and practice of American law and justice.

The DBA presents an Officer of the Year award to a DeKalb County officer for outstanding achievement that brings credit to the department and involves performance well above that which is required by the officer’s normal assignment. This year Detective Lesa T. Robinson received that award.

Also receiving awards for outstanding service were Officer B.J. Garside, Detective L. Armstrong, Officer Love Porter, and Officer Dana Reese.

Several local schools participated this year in our Law Day essay contest. The theme this year was “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters.”

Each year the DeKalb Bar honors DeKalb County community members with the Liberty Bell award. Established more than 30 years ago, the recipient is one who encourages other community members to respect the laws and legal system, learn more about them and take an active role in our American justice system. The 2014 Liberty Bell award winners are Jennifer and Curtis Parker, publisher/editor and general manager of Crossroads News.
