Family Law Section’s May Breakfast Features Justice Hugh Thompson

The DeKalb Bar Association’s Family Law Section was honored to have Supreme Court Justice Hugh P. Thompson speak at the monthly breakfast in May. Justice Thompson discussed the history of pilot project appeals, which are scheduled to expire June 30, 2011.

The pilot project allows the Supreme Court to hear domestic cases unless a majority finds the appeal to be frivolous. Justice Thompson indicated that there are excellent prospects for the project’s renewal. He views the project as a success. Initially, the Court worried that there would be excessive appeals in domestic cases. Instead it appears that there remain many areas of domestic law that the Court has not recently grappled with, hence the law in those areas remains vague and somewhat undefined.

Justice Thompson encouraged attorneys to appeal domestic cases when the law seems unclear. While he declined to name those areas, it was clear that the attendees had numerous ideas as to what might be further illuminated by the Court.
