DeKalb Public Safety Director Miller to Speak

DeKalb Public Safety Director William Miller

William Z. Miller, newly appointed director of Public Safety for DeKalb County, is our Jan. 21 luncheon speaker. Miller was born and raised in Atlanta and has resided in DeKalb County for 20 years. He received his bachelor of science degree (magna cum laude) in Criminal Justice from Georgia State University, Atlanta, and his law degree from Georgia State University College of Law in 2004.

Prior to becoming Public Safety director, Miller prosecuted felony cases as an assistant district attorney in the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, beginning in February 2007. As an assistant district attorney he participated in the challenge to the state’s recently enacted Gang Statute and was the DA’s representative to DeKalb County’s Juvenile Drug Court.

NOVEMBER LUNCHEON: Judge Dorothy Beasley Speaks on “Impunity Arrested – International Response to International Crimes”

Judge Dorothy Beasley of the Georgia Court of Appeals, retired, will speak on international criminal law at the luncheon on Nov. 19 in the Old Courthouse on the square in downtown Decatur. It’s a topic she thinks “we all should know more about” in today’s legal world. Judge Beasley’s long interest in international law became more than a hobby when Emory University presented her with an opportunity to study abroad for an LLM in International Law. Judge Beasley spent her first semester abroad in Budapest at the Central European University. She received her LLM from Emory in 2008.

Gwen Keyes-Fleming, DeKalb County’s District Attorney, will speak to the DeKalb Bar at our September luncheon. Please join us to hear about the new initiatives her office has begun for DeKalb County.

Ms. Keyes-Fleming took office as district attorney in January 2005 and is the first African-American and first woman to serve in this post. The DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office prosecutes between 6,000 and 8,000 felony cases annually. As district attorney, Ms. Keyes-Fleming manages and trains approximately 55 attorneys, more than 100 support personnel, and administers a $12 million budget.

Some of her key initiatives as district attorney include the creation of a pre-trial diversion program, expanding support services for victims, dedicating resources that focus on crimes against women, white-collar crime, gang violence, truancy among teens and Just Us G.A.L.S., Girls Achieving Leadership & Success, an annual teenage mentoring workshop.
