A Little Levity

Just in case you weren’t feeling too old today: The people who are starting college this fall were born in 1992.

  • They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

  • Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

  • The CD was introduced two years before they were born.

  • They have always had an answering machine.

  • They have always had cable.

  • Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

  • Popcorn has always been microwaved.

  • They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

  • They don’t know who Mork was or where he was from.

  • They never heard: “Where’s the Beef?”, “I’d walk a mile for a Camel” or “De plane, Boss, de plane.”

  • McDonald’s meals never came in Styrofoam containers.

  • They don’t have a clue how to use a typewriter.
  •
Pass this on to the other old fogies on your list.

I received the above email, as I have received many similar for various graduating classes over the years, and came up with a few of my own. Please send in your comments and any other remembrances that this generation may not be aware of:

  • The concerns when Lucy and Desi had their own TV show as a bi-cultural married couple.
  • Star Trek was too controversial for television and, though popular, was cancelled quickly.
  • A television season used to have 26 original episodes and a commercial was a full 60 seconds.
  • World War I was supposed to be “the war to end all wars”!
  • Cokes used to come in small green bottles, and you put salted peanuts in them for a lot of fizz and salty flavor.
  • Moon Pies and GooGoo Clusters.
  • Schools and colleges have always been desegregated.
  • There have always been ATM or debit cards.
  • People at the bank used to know your name when you walked inside.
  • Dogs could run the neighborhood and usually came back either 1) when the kids got home from school, or 2) at feeding time.
  • Kids used to run the neighborhood and when the weather was good, they lived outdoors all day and only went home for dinner and again when the sun went down.
